Calgary Drywall Doctor is a drywall contractor serving Thorncliffe in NW Calgary. Thorncliffe sits on the slope below Nose Hill Park, between 14 Street and Centre Street, just north of the older inner-city communities. We have patched, boarded and finished homes here for more than 20 years.
Thorncliffe has some of the oldest housing in the NW quadrant, and that shapes the work. Plaster, stipple ceilings and basements that were finished long ago are the daily routine here, along with a growing number of renovations and suite conversions.
Nose Hill is up the hill to the west, Centre Street runs along the east side, and most of the houses in between are now 55 to 70 years old. That age is where our work comes from.
What We Tend to Find in Thorncliffe Homes
Thorncliffe was built mostly in the 1950s and 1960s. The typical house is a bungalow on a decent lot, with some bi-levels and one-and-a-half storeys, and townhouse and apartment blocks along the main roads. Many homes are on their third or fourth owner, and some have been renovated two or three times.
The earliest homes have plaster walls, or early gypsum board with a plaster skim. Plaster cracks along the lath and around door and window frames, and regular drywall mud will not hold on it. We repair plaster properly, re-key loose areas, and skim coat whole walls where the owner wants a flat modern finish.
Stipple ceilings were added to most of these homes in the 1960s and 1970s. Textures applied before about 1990 should be lab-tested for asbestos before anyone sands or scrapes them. If the test is clean, we remove the texture and finish the ceiling flat. If it is not, a licensed abatement contractor removes it first and we finish afterward.
Bungalows with a side entrance are popular for legal basement suites, and the City of Calgary has clear rules: permits, fire separation, interconnected smoke alarms and egress. We do the drywall portion, including 5/8" Type X fire-rated board on the suite ceiling and shared walls and mould-resistant board on the foundation. Older Thorncliffe basements can be damp, so we check moisture on every wall before we board.
We also see 1960s and 1970s basement developments with panelling and thin board, old water damage around chimneys and bathroom fans, and walls with decades of patches under the paint. A skim coat is often the cleanest fix before a repaint.
Thorncliffe bungalows have been added onto in every decade since they were built. Rear additions, enclosed porches and bedrooms over garages all meet the original house somewhere, and that joint is where ceilings crack and tape lifts. We float those corners so the two structures can move without tearing the finish.
Single-car garages from the 1950s and 1960s usually have no drywall at all. Owners converting one to a workshop or adding a suite above it need the garage boarded with 5/8" Type X on the shared wall and ceiling so the fire separation to the house is intact.

For Thorncliffe the pages that matter most are Plaster Repair, Popcorn Ceiling Removal and Legal Suite Drywall. If your walls have too many old patches to blend, Skim Coating explains how we get them flat before paint.
Landlords call us between tenants for the routine work too: doorknob holes, cracked corners and ceiling stains under an upstairs bathroom. We can usually turn a unit around in a few short visits.
Before a repaint, ask us to walk the main floor with a raking light. We will point out which walls need a skim coat and which are fine, so you only pay for what the house needs.
We also serve Huntington Hills and Beddington Heights to the north. The NW Calgary drywall contractor page lists every NW community we cover.
How a Thorncliffe Drywall Job Goes
Call or email and we will book a visit. In Thorncliffe we ask the age of the house first, because plaster and drywall need different repairs. On a suite we walk the basement, check moisture on the concrete, and confirm where fire-rated board is needed. On a ceiling we ask about test results before we quote removal. You get a written, itemized scope before anything starts.
Most jobs are booked within two to three days of approval. We cover floors, hang plastic or zip walls, and sand with a HEPA vacuum so dust stays in the work area. Plaster and ceiling work take two or three visits because each coat needs to dry. Suites are scheduled around framing and electrical inspections.
We check every wall and ceiling under raking light, clean up, and walk you through the work before we go.
On plaster we cut back loose material to sound plaster, fill with a setting compound, embed mesh tape across the crack, and finish with two or three coats of mud sanded between each. On a suite ceiling we hang 5/8" Type X board, seal the joints and penetrations, and finish to Level 4.

And we tell you when a job does not need us yet. A damp basement wall needs the water fixed first. A fresh ceiling stain needs the roof or the plumbing fixed first. We will come back when the house is ready.
