Calgary Drywall Doctor is a drywall contractor serving Edgemont in NW Calgary. Edgemont runs along the west side of Nose Hill Park, with big two-storeys, walkout basements and some of the best views in the quadrant. We have been patching, boarding and finishing homes here since 2004.
Edgemont houses were built in a narrow window, and that window brought a specific set of drywall problems. If you own here, you have probably already met at least one of them: a crack at the top of the wall every January, a plumber's access holes after a repipe, or a basement that was framed but never finished.
Nose Hill is right out the back gate for many homes here, and the elevation means strong wind, strong sun and big winter temperature swings, all of which drywall notices.
What We Tend to Find in Edgemont Homes
Edgemont was built mostly in the 1980s and into the 1990s. The typical home is a two-storey with a double attached garage, vaulted ceilings in the front room, and a walkout or lookout basement on the sloped lots. Later phases added larger estate homes with higher ceilings and more complex rooflines.
That construction era lines up almost exactly with Poly-B piping, which was used in Calgary homes from roughly 1978 to 1995. Many Edgemont owners have had or will have a repipe done. The plumber cuts holes in walls and ceilings on every floor to reach the lines. We patch, tape and texture-match every one of those holes so the house looks untouched.
These homes have engineered roof trusses. In winter, when the attic is cold and dry and the house is warm, the bottom chord of the truss can lift and pull the ceiling away from interior walls. The result is a crack along the ceiling-to-wall joint that opens in January and closes in spring. We fix it with a floating corner that lets the truss move without tearing the tape.
Original Edgemont ceilings usually have a stipple or knockdown texture. Textures applied before about 1990 should be lab-tested for asbestos before they are disturbed. Many owners now want these ceilings removed and finished flat, especially in the main living areas.
Walkout basements here are prime space, and a lot of them were left bare by the builder. Owners finish them as family rooms, home gyms or suites. We run a moisture check on the foundation walls first, use mould-resistant board where it is warranted, and 5/8" Type X where fire separation is required.
Edgemont also has a lot of open-to-above entries and two-storey great rooms. Patching or re-boarding those walls needs scaffolding or a lift, and finishing them well needs a Level 5 skim coat, because the window wall lights them from the side all afternoon. We plan for both in the quote.
Hail is a fact of life on the ridge. After a bad storm, upper-floor ceilings sometimes show a tea-coloured stain where water came through a damaged roof before it was repaired. We check the board for moisture; if it is dry and firm, we seal and refinish. If it is soft, we cut it out and replace it.

The Edgemont jobs we book most are Poly-B Drywall Repair, Texture Matching after a repipe, and Legal Suite Drywall for walkout basements. For the big front rooms with tall windows, a Level 5 Drywall Finish is the only way to keep the walls from flashing under afternoon sun.
Many Edgemont owners also finish the attached garage as a workshop or gym. The wall and ceiling shared with the house must stay fire-rated with 5/8" Type X board, and we keep it that way while we board the rest.
We also work in Dalhousie to the south and Ranchlands to the west. The NW Calgary drywall contractor page lists the rest of the NW communities we cover.
How an Edgemont Drywall Job Goes
Call or email and we will book a visit. On a Poly-B job we usually come after the plumber is done, count the holes, and quote the patching as one itemized scope. On a basement we measure, check moisture, and confirm board types for each wall. You get everything in writing before we start.
Most jobs are booked within two to three days of approval. We protect floors and stairs, seal off the work area with plastic or zip walls, and sand with a HEPA vacuum. Patch work takes two or three short visits so each coat can dry. Basements take longer and are scheduled around inspections.
We check every finish under raking light, texture-match any patched areas, clean up, and walk you through the work before we leave.
On a truss uplift repair we cut back the tape at the ceiling-to-wall joint, fasten the ceiling board to a backer block or the wall top plate rather than the truss, re-tape the corner so it can float, and refinish. Done this way the crack does not come back next winter.
