Calgary Drywall Doctor is a drywall contractor serving Montgomery in NW Calgary. Montgomery sits on the north bank of the Bow River between Bowness and the university area, and it has changed more in the last 15 years than almost any other NW community. We have worked here since 2004 and have watched the infills go up block by block.
That makes Montgomery a two-speed neighbourhood for us. Half our calls are for original 1950s and 1960s houses that need plaster or ceiling work. The other half are for new builds and gut renovations that need full boarding, taping and finishing on a tight schedule.
Shouldice Park and the river pathways are a short walk from most Montgomery homes, and the lots with a view are the ones being rebuilt first.
What We Tend to Find in Montgomery Homes
The original houses are mostly 1950s and 1960s bungalows, with some smaller post-war homes near the river. Many still have plaster walls or early drywall with a plaster skim. These crack along the lath lines and around door frames. Patching them with standard mud does not last, so we repair plaster the right way or skim coat the whole wall for a flat modern finish.
Stipple ceilings are common in the original homes. Anything textured before about 1990 should be lab-tested for asbestos before anyone sands or scrapes it. If the sample is positive, a licensed abatement contractor removes the texture first and we finish the ceiling after.
Infills are the big story. Narrow two-storeys, side-by-side duplexes and laneway suites are replacing the old bungalows on many streets. These need full boarding and finishing, including 5/8" Type X board on garage-to-house walls and between suite units. Flat paint and LED pot lights show every ridge, so we recommend a Level 5 finish on main walls and ceilings in new builds.
Gut renovations are nearly as common as infills. Owners keep the shell and rebuild the inside. That usually starts with demolition, which we handle cleanly with plastic, zip walls and a HEPA vacuum, and ends with new board throughout. Some of these projects also add a basement suite, which brings in the City's secondary suite rules on fire separation.
Older Montgomery basements are low and sometimes damp. We check moisture on every foundation wall before we board, and we use mould-resistant board where it makes sense.
Many Montgomery lots slope toward the river, so a good number of infills have walkout or lookout basements with big windows. Those lower levels are living space from day one, and they get as much raking light as the main floor. We treat them as finished rooms, not utility space, and recommend the same finish level as upstairs.
Original homes that have not been renovated often still have a single-car garage with no drywall at all, or a basement with a low ceiling and ductwork that needs boxing in. Boxing in ducts and beams neatly is a small job that makes a big difference in how a basement feels.

If the plan includes a basement rental, our Legal Suite Drywall page explains the fire-rated board the City expects.
For builders, we also handle the small things that slow a project down: boarding and finishing bulkheads, the garage, mechanical rooms and closets, so there is nothing left to come back for.
We also serve Bowness to the west and Varsity up the hill. The NW Calgary drywall contractor page lists all the NW communities we work in.
How a Montgomery Drywall Job Goes
It begins with a call or email. For infills and renovations we usually meet your builder on site, walk the framing, and confirm board thickness, fire separations and finish level room by room. For repairs we look at the damage, check for moisture, and talk through options. Either way you get a written, itemized scope before anything starts.
Most jobs are booked within two to three days of approval. New builds are scheduled around rough-in inspections so the board goes up as soon as the inspector signs off. Repairs and plaster work take two or three visits because mud and plaster need to dry between coats.
We finish every job the same way: a raking-light check on the walls and ceilings, a full cleanup, and a walkthrough with you or your builder.
On infills we hang 1/2" board on walls, 5/8" on ceilings framed at 24 inches on centre, moisture-resistant board in bathrooms, cement board behind tile, and 5/8" Type X on fire separations. We tape with paper, set the first coat with setting compound, and finish with two or three coats of all-purpose mud, sanded between each.
