Calgary Drywall Doctor is a drywall contractor serving Aspen Woods in SW Calgary. This is one of the newer estate communities on the city's west edge, built mostly from the 2000s into the 2010s, with big two-storeys, walkout lots and some townhome pockets. The homes are newer than most of what we work on, but newer does not mean trouble-free. Nine and ten foot ceilings, long open walls and wall-to-wall windows show every flaw in a builder-grade finish. Basements are large and often undeveloped. And a home theatre or a bonus room over the garage is only as good as the drywall that wraps it. We have handled all of that in Aspen Woods, and we do it with a written scope, dust control and a raking-light check at the end.

What We Tend to Find in Aspen Woods Homes

Aspen Woods homes are generally well built, but the drywall work inside them was done fast and to a standard that modern lighting and paint colours do not forgive. Here is the usual list.

  • Flashing and visible seams. Most new Calgary homes get a Level 3 or Level 4 finish. Under LED pot lights or beside a floor-to-ceiling window, the joints and screw lines show through flat paint as a faint sheen. A Level 5 skim coat is the fix, and it is the most common finishing request we get in this community.
  • Dark paint and feature walls. Deep greys, navy and black are popular here. Those colours need a Level 5 finish or every ripple in the mud will show.
  • Nail pops in the first years. Framing lumber keeps drying for several winters after a home is built. Screws and nails push through the mud, usually in rows along the studs and ceiling joists.
  • Noise between rooms. Home theatres, music rooms, home offices and bonus rooms over the garage all benefit from resilient channel, double layers of board and damping compound. Most builders did not include any of that.
  • Big, empty basements. Walkout basements with tall ceilings are common. Developing one means a lot of board, a lot of ceiling, and careful fire separation around the mechanical room.

Walkout lots are common on the ridge, and the lower-level exterior walls there get the same moisture check we give every basement. We also see a lot of tall stairwells and two-storey great rooms. Patching or skimming those walls properly takes scaffolding or a lift, not a ladder, and we price that in rather than cutting corners at height. Finally, many Aspen Woods garages are oversized and heated, and owners want them boarded and finished with the fire-rated board the code requires on the house side.

Drywall Services in Aspen Woods

Every service we offer is available in Aspen Woods. These are the ones we do most here.

Drywall Finishing is our top request in this community. A Level 5 Drywall Finish adds a full skim coat over the whole wall so paint goes on with no flashing, and Skim Coating can bring a single feature wall up to that standard without redoing the room.

Drywall Installation covers new walls for renovations and additions, and Soundproofing Drywall is where we add resilient channel, 5/8" board in two layers and acoustic sealant for theatres, offices and bedrooms over a garage.

Basement Drywall turns a walkout basement into living space. We moisture-check the slab first, use mould-resistant board where it makes sense, and put Type X on the furnace room.

Drywall Repair and Ceiling Repair handle nail pops, settling cracks, truss uplift at the ceiling line and the odd water stain from an ice dam or a bathroom leak. Renovation Drywall covers kitchen and ensuite remodels where walls move.

We cover the communities next door too. See West Springs and Signal Hill, or the full SW Calgary page.

How an Aspen Woods Drywall Job Goes

A Level 5 job in a finished home needs more planning than a basement, so here is how we run it.

  1. Site visit. We look at the walls under the actual lighting you live with, and under our own raking light, and show you where the flashing is coming from.
  2. Written scope. The quote lists each wall or room, the finish level, and whether we are skimming over existing paint or taking the surface back.
  3. Protection. Floors, stairs, millwork and furniture get covered. Zip walls close off the work area and a HEPA vac runs on every sander.
  4. Skim, sand, check. Two thin coats of compound over the whole surface, sanded flat and checked under raking light from more than one direction.
  5. Prime. A Level 5 surface needs a quality primer before paint. We tell your painter exactly what we did so the finish holds up.

Most Level 5 jobs on a main floor take three to five days including drying time. The schedule is in the quote and we stick to it. Basements and soundproofing follow the same pattern: measure, written quote, protection, board, tape, finish, walkthrough.

Drywall Questions from Aspen Woods, Calgary

What is a Level 5 finish and do I need it?

Level 5 is the highest drywall finish level in the GA-214 standard. It adds a thin skim coat over the entire surface on top of the normal taping and three coats on joints. You want it for dark or glossy paint, and for walls hit by strong side light from windows or pot lights.

Can you soundproof a bonus room over the garage?

Yes. The usual approach is resilient channel on the ceiling and shared walls, a second layer of 5/8" board with damping compound between the layers, and acoustic sealant at every edge. It cuts noise noticeably, though no wall can block everything.

Do you do the whole basement or just drywall?

We handle the drywall portion: boarding, taping, finishing, fire-rated board and texture. We work alongside your framer, electrician and plumber and can recommend trades we have worked with.
