Calgary Drywall Doctor is a drywall contractor in Whitehorn, NE Calgary, the community just north of Sunridge Mall and the Peter Lougheed hospital area. We repair walls and ceilings, remove and replace old textures, patch Poly-B access holes, and board and finish basements. Whitehorn was built mostly in the 1970s and early 1980s, and the drywall in these homes is at the age where it needs real attention rather than another coat of paint. Call 587-417-5252 for a free written quote. We serve the whole quadrant; the other communities are on our NE Calgary drywall contractor page.
What We Tend to Find in Whitehorn Homes
Whitehorn's housing is mostly bungalows, bi-levels and split-levels from the 1970s, with two-storeys and townhouses from the early 1980s. Many are on their third or fourth owner. The original drywall is 1/2-inch board on the walls and stipple or popcorn texture on nearly every ceiling, often with a few hand-textured patches from repairs over the years that do not quite match.
Water stains are the first thing we see in a lot of Whitehorn ceilings. The NE has had several bad hail seasons, and a roof that took hail damage often leaks for a season before anyone notices. The stain shows up on an upstairs bedroom ceiling or a bathroom ceiling around the fan. Older bathroom fans in these homes were sometimes vented into the attic instead of outside, which leaves soft board above the shower. We check with a moisture meter before quoting, because a stain can hide a much bigger wet area.
Ceiling texture is next. Popcorn ceilings were standard in Calgary homes through the 1980s, and textures applied before about 1990 may contain asbestos. We ask that a sample be lab-tested before any scraping starts. If it tests positive, a licensed abatement contractor removes it first. If it is clean, we scrape it, skim the ceiling, and leave it smooth or spray a fresh knockdown.
Poly-B piping was used from roughly 1978 to 1995, so the later Whitehorn homes often have it. When a plumber replaces it, we patch the access holes afterward. Garages are another common job: a lot of 1970s garages were never boarded, and owners want them finished, or the garage-to-house wall needs fire-rated board to meet code. Settling is mostly done in houses this old, but truss uplift cracks at the ceiling line still open up every winter. Sunridge Mall and the hospital are a few minutes away for most of the community, and the townhouse rows closest to them tend to be the early-1980s builds.

How a Whitehorn Drywall Job Goes
We start with a visit. On a leak, we run a moisture meter across the ceiling and nearby walls to find the real edge of the wet area, which is usually bigger than the stain. On a ceiling texture job, we ask about the build year and whether the texture has been tested. On a basement, we check the foundation walls and slab for moisture. You get a free, written, itemized quote that lists board, finish level, texture and cleanup.
Most Whitehorn jobs are booked within 2 to 3 days. Dust control is set up before the first cut: plastic on the floors, a zip wall to close off the room, and a HEPA vacuum on the sanders. For a stained ceiling, we cut out the damaged board back to solid, dry framing, install new 1/2-inch ceiling board, tape and mud it in three coats, and spray texture to match. For a garage, we board the walls and ceiling, with 5/8-inch Type X on any wall or ceiling shared with the house.
Every surface is inspected under raking light before we call it finished. That low light catches ridges, hollows and texture gaps so they get fixed before paint. We clean up and walk the job with you.
For a basement, the process adds a step. We board the walls with mould-resistant drywall where the foundation showed any damp, use 5/8-inch Type X on the ceiling and shared walls if the space will be a legal secondary suite under a City of Calgary permit, and put moisture-resistant board in the bathroom. Then it is taped, mudded in three coats and sanded like any other room.
