Calgary Drywall Doctor is a drywall contractor serving Martindale in NE Calgary. We patch and repair walls and ceilings, develop basements, board legal secondary suites, and finish rooms that never got a proper finish the first time. Martindale was built out mostly through the 1990s and early 2000s, so the homes here are old enough to have had a few owners and a few rounds of renovation, but new enough that the basics are sound. Our work in this community is a mix of repairs, basement developments and suite conversions. Call 587-417-5252 for a free written quote. We cover the whole quadrant, and you can find the other communities on our NE Calgary drywall contractor page.
What We Tend to Find in Martindale Homes
Martindale is mostly two-storeys and bi-levels built from the 1990s into the early 2000s, with some duplexes and a few newer infill lots. The original finish in most of them was builder-grade: Level 3 or 4 on the walls, a stipple or orange-peel ceiling, and a lot of bulkheads boxing in ductwork. Twenty-odd years later, we see the same handful of problems again and again.
Corner-bead cracks are near the top of the list. The metal bead at outside corners in these homes was often set with too little mud, and Calgary's freeze-thaw cycle and dry indoor winters work it loose. A hairline crack along the corner of a stairwell or a kitchen pass-through is a Martindale classic. Nail pops and truss uplift cracks at the ceiling-to-wall joint show up in the same houses, usually on the top floor after a cold snap.
Basements are where most of the money goes here. A lot of Martindale basements were developed by a previous owner without a permit, and when a family wants to turn that space into a legal secondary suite, the drywall often has to come down and go back up to the fire-separation standard. In Calgary, a legal suite needs a City of Calgary permit, 5/8-inch Type X board on the ceiling and shared walls, interconnected smoke alarms and a proper egress window. We handle the drywall and fire-separation portion.
Hail and roof leaks are the other call. The NE has taken several heavy summer storms, and a ceiling stain in an upstairs bedroom or along a vaulted entry is common. We also see older bathroom fans that were never vented outside, leaving soft, stained board in the attic-side ceiling. The Genesis Centre is a short drive for most of the community, and the homes closest to it along the Saddle Ridge edge are a touch newer than the older western streets.
Drywall Services in Martindale
Here is what we do most in Martindale, with links to the service pages that explain each one.
- Drywall Repair β corner-bead cracks, nail pops, holes from doorknobs and moved furniture, and the openings left after plumbing or electrical work. If your repair needs the knockdown or stipple blended in, see Texture Matching.
- Basement Drywall β developing an unfinished basement, or redoing one that was finished badly. For a tenant or family suite, start with Legal Suite Drywall.
- Drywall Installation β new walls when you open up a kitchen, add a bedroom, or close in a storage room. Renovation Drywall covers the tie-in work where new board meets old.
- Ceiling Repair β truss uplift cracks, sagging tape lines, and stained board. Leak repairs are handled under Water Damage Drywall Repair.
- Drywall Finishing β taping, mudding and sanding to Level 4 or 5 for rooms getting new lighting or dark paint.
How a Martindale Drywall Job Goes
Every job starts with a visit. We look at the damage or the space, ask what you want it to look like when we leave, and check for moisture if a basement or a leak is involved. You get a free written, itemized quote. It lists the board, the finish level, the texture and the cleanup, so you can compare it line by line with any other quote you get.
Most Martindale jobs are booked within 2 to 3 days. We set up dust control before the first cut: plastic on the floors, a zip wall to close off the work area, and a HEPA vacuum on every sander. For a repair, we cut back to solid board, screw in a backer, set the patch, tape and mud it in three coats, and match the texture. For a basement or suite, we board the whole space, with Type X where the fire separation runs and moisture-resistant board in the bathroom, then tape, mud and sand.
Before we leave, every surface gets inspected under raking light so ridges and dips show up before paint does. For a suite, we leave the fire-rated assembly ready for the City of Calgary inspector.
